The misty dawn of September 17,1862, ushered in the Civil War's bloodiest day as Gen. George B. McClellan drove his Union army forward to roll up the left flank of Gen. Robert E. Lee's southerners arrayed in the fields and woods surrounding the quiet Maryland village of Sharpsburg.
Lee’s Confederate left faced extinction. Since dawn’s earliest glimmer, Joseph Hooker’s Union I Corps had launched furious and repeated assaults against the thin gray line wrapped around the Dunker Church and West Woods. As wisps of morning fog spiraled above the Antietam Creek on September 17, 1862, Lee called upon John Bell Hood’s division to bolster his deteriorating left.
